As we know that Quebec has its own provincial law just like Alberta has. In our earlier posts we have discussed the PIPA- Alberta and PIPEDA in brief, now in our upcoming posts we will discuss Quebec’s privacy laws in detail.
It is pertinent to note that Quebec’s privacy law has been in force since 1994, PIPDA is the talk of 2000 but Quebec was the first province in Canada to adopt private sector privacy legislation. Québec’s Commission d’accès à l’information (CAI) and the courts of Quebec have more experience than any other statutory bodies within Canada. Quebec has rich and well founded jurisprudence due to its experience.
Since the act was adopted 25 years ago so it was lacking to meet the various modern situations hence the Bill 64 was introduced in the Quebec National Assembly on 12th June 2020 in order to bring the modern changes in the act and make it more transparent and it should meet the current need.
The Bill is opened for question and answers and the Bill 64 is referred before a committee for consultation.
